Last year's annual mission trip was to Franklin County, Maine. This is an area of high un- and under-employment and limited economic opportunity. Together with Newtown United Methodist Church, we
sent a group of seventy four adults and youth to help repair homes for eight families.
During the days, we built roofs, decks and steps, painted windows,
leveled trailers, and insulated homes. We also took the time to
get to know our host families personally and to share experiences.
We also were able to experience the beauty of Western Maine during a visit to
Rangeley Lake State Park, swimming in the Sandy River, and seeing
mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and wildlife throughout our visit.
We were hosted by the United Methodist Economic Ministry
(UMEM) in Salem, Maine. UMEM is a wonderful organization with a very caring,
organized, and spiritual staff.
Our trip was interrupted by a serious car accident which involved five of our team members. Each was hospitalized with serious injuries, but we were blessed to have everyone survive and to have each recovering at their own pace.
We are very grateful for the attention and support that
the people of Franklin County showed us following the
accident. This includes the UMEM team, Franklin Memorial Hospital,
the University of Maine, and everyone else who reached out
to us.
